Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech big stated its iconic music player has been replaced by different gadgets, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising and marketing, stated: "Right this moment, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have built-in an incredible music experience throughout all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with assist for spatial audio - there is no better solution to take pleasure in, discover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that could hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new class of digital music player that allows you to put your entire music assortment in your pocket and take heed to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the identical once more."

Comparable MP3 players launched by Microsoft and Sony did not have the same success because the iPod.

Apple has released 5 variations of its music player - the Basic, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.
