Last NYC public payphone removed

New York City's last financial institution of public payphones was removed from a road nook in Midtown.

NEW YORK - The ultimate New York City public pay phone was eliminated on Monday morning. 

The bank of two phones was on 7th Avenue and fiftieth Street in Midtown Manhattan. And, as you may expect in Manhattan, graffiti was scrawled on it. 

The city began removing payphones in 2015 and changing them with public Wi-Fi hotspots.

The elimination marks the tip of the payphone era within the metropolis except for some personal payphones on public property and 4 permanent full-length so-called Superman booths.

LinkNYC, which runs the Wi-Fi hotspots, says the network will likely be expanded so as to add 5G functionality this summer.

In addition to free Wi-Fi, LinksNYC gives entry to a social services listing, device charging, free cellphone calls inside the U.S., and transit and climate alerts.

The final New York Metropolis public pay telephone financial institution was eliminated on Monday morning. The kiosk, which housed two telephones, was on 7th Avenue and fiftieth Road in Midtown Manhattan.

Town has eliminated thousands of payphones across all five boroughs prior to now a number of years.  In 2014, there have been greater than 6,000 lively public pay telephones on city sidewalks, in line with the city web site.
