Mum or dad with hid weapon by chance shoots self while at Arlington ISD school, police say

Arlington police stated Duff Elementary School was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a mum or dad with a concealed weapon had his gun by accident go off, hitting the parent within the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police said Duff Elementary Faculty was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a mother or father with a hid weapon had his gun by chance go off, hitting the guardian within the leg.

The school had early launch and students were released at the deliberate time of 12:10 p.m.

Based on police, the mother or father, identified as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and unintentionally shot himself. His harm was not critical.

The college district said White was contained in the building, near the foyer area, and not within the hallway near college students when the gun went off.

Police and school officers mentioned there was no menace made and the dad or mum did not have "malicious intent."

No students or employees have been injured. The parent was taken to an space hospital after being shot in the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones stated after White was released from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with illegal carrying of a weapon in prohibited locations and discharge of a firearm in certain municipalities.

In the two days because the Uvalde mass school capturing, there have been five instances in North Texas related to guns brought to varsities or threats made.

Arlington dad and mom said their minds immediately thought of the worst once they had been notified.

No mum or dad ever needs there to be a motive for them to get a text message saying their child's school is on lockdown.

However since this week's lethal capturing at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they cannot help but think the worst when they do.

"Once I received the textual content message, I used to be like, ‘Oh my God, one thing goes to happen.’ I used to be shocked," father or mother Karima Rasheed said.

While most instances, lockdowns are solely drills students have to take part in, Rasheed's son, Rami, stated that realizing what happened earlier this week made this lockdown completely different. 

"I started seeing my classmates starting to cry and our trainer bought a notification on their cellphone saying someone was in the building," he mentioned.

Guns aren't allowed on college property, and oldsters FOX 4 spoke with mentioned even when it was a mistake, the timing is simply terrible.

"What are we going to do? They have to go to highschool, and clearly, statistically, it's unlikely to happen, however you never wish to be the one statistic. What if it's your youngsters?" Matthew Mitchell stated.

Mitchell lives across the street from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to another Arlington college. 

"I’m terrified, absolutely terrified. I’ve obtained twin six-year-olds that go to a different Arlington faculty and every time I hear there is a lockdown or a school shooting, my coronary heart jumps into my throat," he said.

Rasheed said Thursday was the commencement day for sixth grade students at Duff Elementary.

While driving her son to high school in the morning, she had a chat with him about Uvalde and what to do if something ever occurred at his faculty.

"If one thing occurred, you’ve acquired to run anyplace that’s secure and hide," she advised her child.

Whereas some say the incident in Uvalde is simply too recent to talk politics, Mitchell stated one thing needs to be completed now. 

"They wish to talk about it, they want to campaign on it, they want to fundraiser on it, however they don’t need to truly move any laws and do anything," he added.
