Arlington police stated Duff Elementary School was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a mum or dad with a hid weapon had his gun by accident go off, hitting the guardian within the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police stated Duff Elementary Faculty was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a guardian with a concealed weapon had his gun by chance go off, hitting the father or mother in the leg.

The varsity had early release and students had been launched on the planned time of 12:10 p.m.

In keeping with police, the guardian, recognized as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and unintentionally shot himself. His damage was not severe.

The college district mentioned White was inside the building, close to the foyer area, and never within the hallway close to college students when the gun went off.

Police and faculty officials stated there was no threat made and the mum or dad didn't have "malicious intent."

No college students or employees had been injured. The parent was taken to an space hospital after being shot in the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones said after White was launched from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited locations and discharge of a firearm in sure municipalities.

In the two days since the Uvalde mass faculty capturing, there have been 5 instances in North Texas associated to guns brought to schools or threats made.

Arlington parents mentioned their minds immediately thought of the worst when they were notified.

No mum or dad ever needs there to be a motive for them to get a textual content message saying their child's faculty is on lockdown.

However since this week's lethal capturing at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they can't help however think the worst once they do.

"When I received the textual content message, I used to be like, ‘Oh my God, one thing is going to happen.’ I was shocked," dad or mum Karima Rasheed said.

Whereas most occasions, lockdowns are solely drills students have to take part in, Rasheed's son, Rami, stated that realizing what occurred earlier this week made this lockdown totally different. 

"I began seeing my classmates beginning to cry and our teacher received a notification on their cellphone saying somebody was within the constructing," he mentioned.

Mitchell lives across the street from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to a different Arlington school. 

"I’m terrified, absolutely terrified. I’ve bought twin six-year-olds that go to a different Arlington college and each time I hear there's a lockdown or a school shooting, my heart jumps into my throat," he mentioned.

Rasheed said Thursday was the commencement day for sixth grade college students at Duff Elementary.

Whereas driving her son to school in the morning, she had a chat with him about Uvalde and what to do if something ever occurred at his faculty.

"If something happened, you’ve got to run wherever that’s protected and hide," she advised her child.

While some say the incident in Uvalde is simply too recent to speak politics, Mitchell mentioned one thing needs to be accomplished now. 

"They need to discuss it, they need to marketing campaign on it, they want to fundraiser on it, but they don’t wish to really go any laws and do something," he added.
