16-year-old arrested; deliberate taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass faculty taking pictures that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department mentioned in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful gadget materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which will result in dying or nice bodily harm.

Police mentioned they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a student at Berkeley High School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic objects that could possibly be used to create extra weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"College security stays a high precedence for the division," police mentioned in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teenager was trying to recruit weren't disclosed. Police mentioned this case remains beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the varsity's group that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our commonplace apply, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we were assured that this individual did not pose a right away menace to the Berkeley High College community."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter.
